Starting out in 2019 with two t-shirts and an idea to find and design clothing that could be worn from a coffee shop straight into a gym. In the early stages travelling by train to drop off our monthly t-shirt sale set the foundations to trying to provide the best customer service on both an individual and team level basis, even if that meant receiving a railway fine in the process!

Throughout lockdown the company began to make traction through new designs, products and new found motivation during such an unsteady time. Selling t-shirts out of the back of a car hardly sounds the most glamorous story into kit supply, but it’s our story and we couldn’t be more proud of it.
We were then approached by our first team at Sussex University, setting the foundation for our renewed sense of purpose within the university sports scene.

By 2021 we had expanded to work with more teams at Sussex and individual athletes alongside our growing catalogue of clothing and early synthetic garments. Our small but passionate following began to emerge within the context of student athletes. This local and loyal group of teams at Sussex became the mainstay of our ethos, innovating and elevating university sport.

We started expanding across the south coast and further north, launching our first events contract up in Nottingham, receiving grant funding to help create memorable student sporting experiences.
After 3 years of bootstrapping, long evenings and constant setbacks we were finally able to showcase our innovative and disruptive approach to university sport and in doing so began giving back to the students that made us what we are.

I finally graduated from Sussex University specialising in sports law, and during my final exams managed to raise investment and bring on a partner in July, Sussex alumni Josh Rondel. Bonding over our love of sport we set out to build a brand that will increase participation at grassroots and elite level.
We have formed an experienced and diverse board of directors including the ex-CEO of British Athletics, Ian Braid. We’re still in our start-up phase and emerging with a degree of insight unheard of in university kit supply, a brand run by and for students.
Cheering our teams on from the sidelines and organising socials, we get student sport like no other brand. Going into a new season working with around 20 teams across the UK, our unwavering passion for sport and connection with our teams is something which other suppliers and multinationals can mimic but never truly copy.

Our goal each year has always been the same, increasing participation and quality of student sport across the UK. We are building a brand which invests back into sport, sponsoring individual young athletes and reinvesting profits back into every team we work with.

Run by ex-student athlete alumni, we know all too well how existing suppliers short change and underperform when it comes to student sport. Life should be enjoyed without the hassle of both poor quality fits and empty pockets. Our purpose is reinvesting in sport. Join us now.

I’m often asked what makes BackstreetCompany’s kit supply different. The price? The quality? The reinvestment back into university teams?
Each time I reiterate that although these factors are essential in what makes up our DNA at Backstreet, the main thing I say is that we actually live our brand. From playing as part of Badminton England from a young age to now competing in my early twenties on the British tri-series circuit, the drive to get myself and others invested in sport has always been a mainstay of what we do at Backstreet.
It’s so easy for SME’s & for-profit corporations to present a facade of being motivated by anything other than a quick buck. That’s why in a world of whitewashed slogans I’m so proud that BackstreetCompany continues to live up to our ethos of putting students and sport first. As a Sussex Alumni specialising in sports law, I’ve built a brand to reinvest in sport.
Josh is a Sussex alumni who still plays semi pro football and coaches sport in his spare time. Currently coaching an u18 county football side, his leadership skills and organisation has taken Backstreet to a new level. Having built a global travel buddy app after university, Josh is excited to use these lessons to grow Backstreet into the no.1 university kit supplier in the UK.
Settled in Brighton, he is actively involved in all things sport across the county. Walks along the seafront and networking with fellow entrepreneurs makes Brighton a fantastic city to grow our business from. We look forward to playing sport with you soon!
BackstreetCompany has officially signed Ian Braid, founder and MD of award winning consultancy DOCIAsport. Prior to setting up DOCIAsport Ian was CEO of the British Athletics Commission for over 1500 olympic and paralympic athletes across 40 sports.
We are thrilled to add Ian’s sporting knowledge and desire to positively impact sport. Our ambitions align to lead more inclusive university sporting experiences because we know how much sport matters to everyone.
